Captain John W. Tatem founded the country’s first ship consignee agency in the city of San Pedro de Macorís: J.W. Tatem & Co. It offered cargo, unloading, and ship representation services.
The company emerged during the boom of the Dominican Republic’s sugar industry due to the shortage of sugar in Europe following World War I. This led to a notable increase in maritime transport activities.

J.W. Tatem & Co. has become the most successful shipping company on the country’s south coast. Casa Tatem pioneered business diversification in the maritime sector, marking the beginning of this action that has been maintained as the company’s philosophy for over 100 years.

Víctor Rannik and Reet Kunari, spouses originally from Estonia, arrived in the Dominican Republic fleeing their native country years before Nazi control. Although they intended to settle in the United States, they ended up putting down roots on the island.

On October 16th, Jaak Ero Rannik Kunari was born in La Romana, belonging to the 7th generation of the family’s maritime tradition.

Commercial activity decreased in San Pedro de Macorís as a result of dictator Rafael L. Trujillo’s incursion into the sugar business and export. J.W. Tatem moved its headquarters to Mercedes Street in the Dominican capital, then called Ciudad Trujillo. Víctor Rannik began working for the company as Operations Manager and Ramón Báez Romano as Commercial Manager. The company gained strength and grew again, this time with J.W. Tatem Jr. at the helm.

Casa Tatem obtained the representation of the French line Compagnie Générale Maritime, later merging with Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes (now CMA CGM).

The firm moved to its address at number 15 El Conde Street. Casa Tatem had the representation of transatlantic passenger ships. Faced with the economic recession of the last years of the Trujillo dictatorship, John W. Tatem decided to sell the company to Víctor Rannik and Ramón Báez Romano. That same year, Juan Periche Vidal joined the company as Head of Maritime Operations, a well-known person in the sector.

The shipping company adopts the name Báez y Rannik, S.A., the surnames of its two new majority partners, Ramón Báez Romano and Víctor Rannik. In the following years, the company expands its services and experiences significant commercial growth.

As a result of the armed conflicts of the April War, the Báez & Rannik company operated temporarily in Mr. Víctor Rannik’s apartment.

This year, the company Consignaciones Marítimas (now Operaciones Portuarias) is created to separate the work of loading, unloading, and handling merchandise from the steamship agency services. In this same period, new companies specializing in different processes of the maritime business emerged to offer diversity and excellence to customers.

The boom of containers demands a rapid adaptation of Dominican ports so that they can receive deeper-draft ships. Báez & Rannik contributes as a spokesperson for the sector to secure the necessary investments to condition the Port of Haina.

Báez & Rannik establishes its headquarters on the 7th floor of the La Cumbre building in the Ensanche Naco sector, in the Dominican Republic.

Following the death of Víctor Rannik, his sons Jaak E. Rannik and Juhan Rannik take over the management of the company. Báez & Rannik signs a contract to manage the tanker ships that bring oil to the refinery. The buoy and oil pipeline to unload the crude oil are installed offshore, 2 km from the coast of Palenque.

Báez & Rannik becomes the first Shipping Agency in the country to offer regular services to the Port of Haina. It also promotes the founding of Remolcadores Dominicanos (now Svitzer).

Báez & Rannik establishes its headquarters on the second floor of the Naco Shopping Center, on Tiradentes Avenue in the Ensanche Naco sector, in the Dominican Republic.

After the passage of Hurricane David, the first vessel to enter the Port of Haina was the barge St. Thomas, consigned to Báez & Rannik. It arrived from Puerto Rico with the first international maritime aid that contributed to the country’s recovery.

This year, the largest ship ever to approach our island visited the country, the gigantic tanker Pengal with a capacity of 90,000 tons, and was serviced by Báez & Rannik.
Báez & Rannik actively participates in the creation of the Port Workers’ Pension and Retirement Fund.

The brothers Jaak E. Rannik and Juhan Rannik buy the shares of Ramón Báez, and the company changes its name to Agencias Navieras B&R.

Agencias Navieras B&R established its headquartes in Torre Panamericana on Abraham Lincoln Avenue no. 504, in the Piantini sector, Dominican Republic. The same year the company also opened a second office in Puerto Plata to increase maritime activity in the northern part of the country.

Agencias Navieras B&R established another office in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic.

B&R Group was created, a group of companies dedicated to nautical services and other commercial maritime transport activities; thirteen companies made up this group, Agencias Navieras B&R being the most important.

Around this year the company built other offices in the Port of Haina, using containers. It developed to be a truck service workshop afterwards.

Jeffrey T. Rannik, first son of Jaak E. Rannik, began his work at Agencias Navieras B&R after holding various positions in the company, in 2010 he assumed the presidency of the B&R Group.
The same year Agencias Navieras B&R demanded on behalf of the sector that shipping companies be responsible for the maintenance and dredging of the Dominican ports, thus the firm Dragados del Caribe was born.

To celebrate its 75th anniversary, Agencias Navieras B&R launched the slogan “First in Dominican Maritime Trade” and developed an extensive program of activities, including the National Marine Congress, with the aim of highlighting the importance of the field in the Dominican economy, as well as the obligation to preserve its ecological balance.

Jaak B. Rannik, second son of Jaak E. Rannik, is named Executive Vice President of the B&R Group, after several years working hard in different areas of the company.

Agencias Navieras B&R served as promoter and participated in the development of the Caucedo Multimodal Port as part of the founding group.
On December 6th, the Caucedo Multimodal Port begins its operations with the CMA CGM Colombie ship, brokered by Agencias Navieras B&R. With this achievement, the wise vision of Jaak E. Rannik has been recorded in the history of commerce in the Dominican Republic.

To celebrate its 90th anniversary, Agencias Navieras B&R published a literary work “Océanos de Tinta y Papel”, which tells the history of Dominican navigation and maritime development. It was written by Miguel Reyes Sánchez, and it won the 2012 National Book Fair Award Eduardo León Jimenes. The book also circulates in Spain, Mexico, Portugal, Panama and China.
In addition, the virtual library of the Shipowners Association of the Dominican Republic was created with the contributions made by Agencias Navieras B&R on maritime issues. This library was named after Juan Periche Vidal, honoring him for his expertise in the field and who collected a large amount of said documentary material.

Agencias Navieras B&R built a Terminal in the Port of Haina for containers, from where rental and repair work on chassis and containers is currently carried out.

Agencias Navieras B&R was a sponsor for the Second Edition of the “Derrotero de la Isla de Santo Domingo”, published in 2015. A document that serves as a nautical guide contains instructions, data, and information of interest to sailors who visit the coasts of the island of Santo Domingo.

The tourist port with the highest investment in the country was inaugurated: Amber Cove, located in Maimón Bay in Puerto Plata. B&R Group participated in this project as a founding partner company. On October 12th, 2015, Amber Cove received its first cruise.

IS Services was created, a logistics operations and storage company that complemented the wide range of services of the B&R Group, located within the Caucedo Multimodal Port, operating as a Free Trade Zone. It offers storage, inventory management, logistics services, distribution, and transportation of merchandise.

The Dominican Association of Exporters (ADOEXPO) awarded the B&R Group the Award of Excellence for Exporter Service, an award that recognizes and encourages the improvement and growth of exporters in terms of quality, innovation, search for new markets and social commitment

Agencias Navieras B&R reaches its 100 years of history and services. The celebration included multiple meetings with clients, held from February to September and the main event being an important conference by Don Tapscott. At the event, the new name of the company was announced, Rannik Agencias Navieras.

Rannik inaugurates the first -22 degrees Celsius frozen warehouse at the Caucedo Logistics Center, in Caucedo Multimodal Port. The event was led by the main executives of the company, Jeffrey Rannik and Jaak Rannik. In addition, it was attended by the Constitutional Vice President of the Dominican Republic, Raquel Peña, as well as other representatives.

During an event chaired by the President of the Dominican Republic, Mr. Luis Abinader Corona, an air cargo warehouse was inaugurated, created under an alliance with the multinational company United Parcel Service (UPS), located at Las Américas International Airport.

Báez & Rannik establishes its headquarters on the second floor of the Naco Shopping Center, on Tiradentes Avenue in the Ensanche Naco sector, in the Dominican Republic.
